There are actually many different forms of heart disease. The term heart disease refers to a wide range of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), and congenital heart defects — structural problems present from birth.
Among these, the most common type—particularly in the United States—is coronary artery disease (also known as coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease). This occurs when plaque made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances accumulates inside the coronary arteries, which are responsible for supplying oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle.
Heart attack symptoms — also known as myocardial infarction symptoms — can differ widely from person to person. To help recognize a possible heart attack, here are some of the most commonly reported signs:
About two-thirds of people who experience a heart attack report having chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue days or even weeks beforehand.
Those with angina (temporary chest pain) may notice that the pain occurs with less physical effort than before. Any change in the frequency, intensity, or pattern
During a heart attack, pain or pressure is often felt in the center of the chest and may radiate to the back, neck, jaw, or arms.
Some people experience a gas-like pressure or pain in the upper abdomen, which can easily be mistaken for indigestion.
Half of the deaths from heart attack occur in the first 3 or 4 hours after the onset of symptoms, so it is important to know and recognize the warning signs.
